Why the flowing Anarkali is the most-loved festive silhouette in Chikankari — and how to choose yours.

The Anarkali — a fitted bodice that flares into a long, floor-sweeping skirt — is the most romantic silhouette in Indian ethnic wear, and in Chikankari it becomes something special: the hand embroidery runs in vertical panels down the flare, catching the light as the garment moves. It is the piece most people reach for when they want to feel dressed up.
Anarkalis are festive by nature. The length and the volume make them a natural choice for weddings, receptions, festivals and celebrations, where a flowing hemline and worked panels do the talking. A Chikankari Anarkali in a jewel tone with silver or white thread reads as quietly luxurious rather than loud.
Fabric matters here more than anywhere. Anarkalis want fluid cloth that falls and flares — georgette and chiffon are the classics, giving movement and a soft drape, while heavier fabrics would flatten the silhouette. Check the fabric, the lining and the length on the product page, and whether the piece comes with a dupatta.
On colour, Chikankari Anarkalis have moved well beyond white. Plum, wine, teal, black and deep pastels all work beautifully, and the contrast between a rich base and pale thread-work is part of the appeal. Choose a colour you can accessorise easily and repeat across events.
Fit is key with a flared garment. Go by the garment measurements, pay attention to the bust and the kurta length, and size up if unsure — an Anarkali should skim the body at the top and fall freely below. If alterations are offered, a small adjustment at the waist or length makes a big difference.
Keep styling simple and let the silhouette lead: statement jhumkas, a few bangles, and heels or embellished juttis are enough. Because georgette and chiffon are delicate, dry-clean your Anarkali, store it folded in muslin away from perfume sprays, and it will stay beautiful for many seasons.
