How to wear hand-embroidered Chikankari to work — comfortable, professional and quietly distinctive.

Chikankari is one of the easiest ways to look polished at work without feeling overdressed. The embroidery is subtle, the fabrics breathe through a long day, and a well-chosen kurti reads as professional and quietly distinctive at the same time. Here is how to build an office wardrobe around it.
Start with straight-cut kurtis in neutral tones — white, ivory, black, soft pastels. A straight silhouette is the most workplace-appropriate, and neutral colours mix and match so a handful of pieces give you many outfits. Cotton, mulmul and rayon are the comfortable, breathable choices for daily wear.
Pair them with clean bottoms: well-fitted cigarette pants, straight trousers or palazzos in coordinating neutrals. Keep footwear simple — closed juttis, loafers or block heels — and jewellery minimal, such as small studs and a slim watch. The embroidery should be the only ornament that needs to show.
For days with a meeting or an after-work event, the same kurti dresses up instantly with a contrast dupatta and a pair of jhumkas — no need to change outfit. This versatility is exactly why Chikankari suits a working wardrobe: one piece, several contexts.
On fit, go by the garment measurements rather than the size letter, and favour a comfortable, easy cut for all-day wear. Keep a small set of work-appropriate accessories ready so getting dressed is quick on busy mornings.
Care keeps office whites and pastels looking sharp: wash cold, dry in shade, skip optical-brightener detergents, and store folded. A few good Chikankari kurtis, looked after well, will outlast and out-style a drawer full of fast fashion.
